Dr.Bam's New Book 'Democracy, More than Just Elections', A Guidepost

Brigalia Bam will on Friday July 3, 2015 make another contribution to literature and democracy with her new autobiography titled .

Formally educated in South Africa and abroad, Bam specializes in teaching, social work, communications and management.

Born in the former Transkei, in the Eastern Cape Province, Dr. Bam is a qualified social worker with a post-graduate degree from the University of Chicago.

In the 1980s Bam worked for the Women’s Workers Programme that was part of the International Food and Allied Workers Association in Geneva.

She has co-ordinated the World YMCA International Training Institute and Programme, as well as its affiliate, the Development for Human Rights.

Dr. Bam worked as the general secretary for the South African Council of Churches between 1997 and 1998.

She was also founding member of the Women’s Development Foundation and became the foundation’s president in 1998.

Bam has been a board member of the Matla Trust as well as the SABC.

Since 1999, she was appointed by former president Nelson Mandela to be the chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa. She headed the IEC for 10 years.

In an extract of her latest book 'Democracy, More than Just Elections' made available by the South African, Sunday Times newspaper recently, she reveals how she got to know Nelson Mandela.

"My relationship with Madiba had come a long way. I had known him since 1955. I met him in Johannesburg when I was a student at the Jan Hofmeyr School of Social Work. In my first year I got to know Winnie Madikizela and Marcia Finca, who were in their second year but who were from my part of the world (the Transkei).

They welcomed me as a “home girl” and we became friends. They showed me the ways of Joburg. One day, Winnie invited us to go with her to certain lawyers’ offices in town. Oliver Tambo was from her town in the Transkei, Bizana, and she wanted to pay him a courtesy call.

Buti (brother) Oliver Tambo received us warmly but seemed very reserved. Then in walked this tall, rather attractive person with a very fashionable parting in his hair. We all looked at him. He wanted to know who we were and where we came from, and offered us tea. We were feeling coy and shy. We ate lemon cream biscuits – the first time I had tasted them as I couldn’t afford them! We were fascinated with that name: Rolihlahla. We never called him Nelson. He was Buti Rolihlahla."

Her other works include, 1971 What is Ordination Coming To?; 1979 New Perspectives for Third World Women; 1986 Priorities for Women in South Africa in Speaking of faith: cross-cultural perspectives on women, religion and social change; 1994 Women Voices Worldwide; 1998 All about Eve: Women of Africa in Anglicanism: A Global Communion.

Dr. Bam has been awarded with the 1999 Order of Simon of Cyrene; the Order of the Baobab in Silver;  2000 The SAWW Award and the Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Peace and Reconciliation 2013.

From Goa With Love: A Message from Vangile Makwakwa

A quick hello from India (again) View this email in your browser Hello, I hope you're well. I'm in Goa, India and just wanted to say hi. I'm here for 2 months and am already thinking about moving my base to Goa as I trek across Asia for a year or three. But maybe I should wait until I get to Sri Lanka in February (I will be there for 3 months) because I hear that place is nothing short of stunning. I know, right? I just arrived and I've already decided I'm moving to this continent and started making provisional bookings for my accommodation in Sri Lanka. But I think I'm in love with the energy in Goa. It's definitely doing something incredible to my soul. Can't put it into words just yet but I can feel a peace descending over me. Plus I keep getting invited to some interesting places and have decided to just say yes to it all.   And to think I almost cancelled this trip Yes, you read correctly. Last Wednesday, 2 days before my flight to Goa, I was crying to my coach, explaining that I want to cancel this trip and cut my losses. I'd been sick, had endured weeks of anxiety, my tummy had gone to war on itself, I'd gained weight (I seriously didnt believe I was capable of weight gain until recently since I've been the same weight for forever). And worse, I felt like my finances were taking a hit (they have but I'm so chilled out about it, I'm now wondering if I'm too calm). I'd never been to Goa and had no clue what to expect from this whole trip. I wanted out.  I wanted to stay in my comfort zone and never leave. Leaving meant losing all I'd worked hard for - I've already spent most of my 20s living in foreign countries and accumulating debt so my fear was/is that I was/am gonna do the same thing in my 30s.   What will your life look like in 6 months from now? As I was justifying my reason to stay in my comfort zone my coach asked the same question I ask all my coaching clients: if you make the decision to go, what will your life look like in 6 months from now? Will your life contract or expand? As soon as she asked me that question - I burst out laughing. To me the answer was and still is obvious - no matter what happens, my life will expand. Even if the energy in Goa was totally off and I wasn't getting all these awesome invites to random things, my life will still expand. Why? Because I left my comfort zone and faced my fears and that can only teach me something new about me. I know this from the experience in my 20s which didnt ruin my life - but totally destroyed me and remade me into something more beautiful. All that travel and accumulating debt led to a new career and a journey that Im still trying to wrap my head around. On days like today, I get to wake up in awe of this journey and ask - how did I get here?   Surrender to your journey This whole experience has taught me a lot about abundance and money. There's a difference between a "growth and expansion mindset" and "a savings and maintain what you have mindset". Sometimes we can't create wealth because we're too scared of losing what we have so we focus on staying in our comfort zone and maintaining the status quo, rather than leaving, going on an adventure so we can grow and invest what we have. All investments and entrepreneurial ventures are a risk - they all require us to give up something to make them successful. And that's what we're all really afraid of - we're scared to lose. But sometimes to get the things we want, we have to be willing to let go of the things we have. So what are you too afraid to let go of and how is it holding you back? BARELY a year after their return to football, sweet and chocolate giant Cadbury are not regretting their move to sponsor the United School Sport Association of South Africa (Ussasa) as they are on their way to rewriting the history books.

The Chappies Little League, which was relaunched this year with a R3 million per year sponsorship, surpassed the initial target to register about 2 500 primary schools around the country and amassed 6 023 schools.

As a result of that early success, veteran sports sponsorship consultant Geoff Wald flew to London this week to register the tournament with the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest soccer tournament ever.

The current record-holder listed by the Guinness Book of Records is a tournament held in South Korea that drew 5 000 teams.

"The response by schools was overwhelming and it gives us courage to think what we can do to expand and cover almost every school-going kid in the country," said Wald.

Chappies brand marketing manager Moshe Kola said his company was delighted at the overwhelming success of the competition and were looking at expanding next year's event.

"When we signed the contract with Ussasa, our target was to reach at least 2 500 of the 18 000 primary schools in the country and grow gradually with time. What happened is like a miracle.

"That is why we want to register the tournament in the Guinness Book of Records . If our registration is accepted, not only will it make us and Ussasa proud, but mostly the children who kicked the ball during the games," said Kola.

Kola said his company was looking at involving the girls when the school soccer season began next year or launching a regional tournament that will include winners from South Africa, Botswana and Swaziland.

Ussasa soccer secretary and SA Football Association/Transnet Sport School of Excellence manager Steve Pila was also excited about the latest developments.

"This is a confirmation that South Africa is one of the best footballing nations in the world.

"The Chappies Little League is not a new concept and we all know its successes during the 1980s before it was terminated ," Pila said.

Among top players who once played in the tournament are Junaid Hartley, Thabo Mooki and Brian Baloyi.

SASFA’s SPECIAL CONGRESS DECISION ON SAFA’s SCHOOLS FOOTBALL TAKES OVER

South African Schools Football Association (SASFA) general members from the 9 Provinces held a special general congress in Johannesburg to consider the SAFA resolution to take over the running of schools football.  On the 18th July 2015 the Congress reiterated the Executive position to categorically reject the decision of SAFA to take over schools football. This decision is not only ill informed, it is unconstitutional and unwarranted.

SASFA has explored all avenues in an attempt to engage SAFA without any success. SASFA is disheartened by SAFA’s actions to set up parallel schools football structures in the Provinces, the organization views this unfortunate action by SAFA as disruptive, destructive and irresponsible. Such actions are detrimental to the very essence of education and the well-being of vulnerable pupils, especially in their formative years.

Therefore the leadership of SAFA is urged to desist from these disruptive actions and constructively engage SASFA in a manner that befits a national federation, in the interest of football development, which is currently at its lowest ebb.
SASFA recognizes and respects the fact the SAFA is the custodian of football in the country whilst SASFA is an integral part of the football development continuum and has been since the dawn of democracy.

SASFA contribution in football development and the impact it has cannot be ignored and trivialized. SASFA cannot whimsically be wished away at a stroke of a pen. Therefore, SASFA cordially calls upon SAFA President, Dr. Danny Jordaan to call his troops back to the negotiating table in the interest of football development.

The General Council appreciates the guidance and words of encouragement the association received from National Association of Schools Governing Bodies as articulated by the General Secretary of, Mr. Matakanye Matakanye, during the SASFA Special General Council meeting. SASFA is further humbled by the overwhelming support from SADTU and Sponsors in attendance today. SADTU’s Mamahase Mohale said “We don’t want to see confusion in our schools. SASFA has been doing a good job and they should be left alone. They are the only organization discharged with the responsibility of administering and managing school football in the country”.

SASFA like all other nine (9) Associate Members of South African Football Association (SAFA) is an independent juristic body with its own constitution. It is a voluntary organization of current and former educators who came together because of their passion to advance football development at schools level. SASFA is responsible for the administration and organization of football played in schools whilst the mother body (SAFA) is responsible for out- of- school Football. It is the only school’s football structure recognized by both the Departments of Basic Education and Sport and Recreation South Africa. Therefore, all SASFA’s programs are conducted and managed in collaboration with SAFA and the two Departments from Local, Regional, Provincial and National levels.

Up until the formation of SASFA, then known as USSASA Football, schools’ Football was not affiliated to SAFA. Following the formation of SASFA, its members voluntarily applied for Associate membership of SAFA for the purposes of aligning football development programs in the country. Since then SASFA has been regularly reporting and accounting to SAFA in respect of its development program. For the past 21 years, without exception, the Presidents of SAFA including the current president presided over SASFA’s AGM wherein the Executive accounts to general membership. For all these years SAFA received Audited Annual and activity reports. SAFA has never at any point expressed their discontentment with the manner in which SASFA is managed and administered.

As a tradition, Dr. Danny Jordaan addressed SASFA General Council meeting held on the 19th July 2014 at OR Tambo Airport`s Garden Court hotel in Johannesburg. In his address, he expressed the need for SAFA to support SASFA as schools` structures at all levels and not only at National level. He apologized for the omission of SASFA’ team during the SAFA U/17 Inter Provincials tournament and he promised to regularize this anomaly for SASFA to participate in the 2015 tournament. He acknowledged that SASFA plays an integral part of the development of football in South Africa. SASFA is the face of grass root football in the country therefore, SASFA members should always work collaboratively with SAFA members for the attainment of football objectives. Dr. Jordaan promised to invite two representatives of SASFA to attend the World Cup in Russian.

SASFA is an associate member of SAFA that has always complied with all constitutional imperatives of the mother body. We have always been a loyal member of the Association and the biggest with visible programs. And SASFA has always been a member in good standing.

The CEO of SAFA, Mr. Dennis Mumble attended SASFA’s Strategic Planning Workshop held in October 2014 and he was very happy with the direction SASFA was taking in aligning their programs to SAFA’s Vision 2022. He applauded SASFA’s initiatives to including private schools and former Model C schools participate in Schools Football. What has suddenly changed that forced SAFA to take such a radical decision without thorough consultation?

At the Extra Ordinary Congress of SAFA on the 28th March, SAFA claimed that the Minister of Sport and Recreation instructed them on the 19th December 2014 to take over control of schools football. This is something the Minister’s office has categorically refuted. SASFA was informed about the Ministers directive at an impromptu meeting 30 minutes before start of the Congress meeting.

Prior to this impromptu meeting on the day of the Congress, SASFA had never been consulted nor informed of the Ministers directive. SASFA immediately raised an objection about the timing of the information from the Minister. Upon raising this objection, the Convener of the impromptu meeting promised that in the event the matter is raised in the Congress, he would propose to the Congress to defer it to the meeting between SASFA and SAFA, which was scheduled to take place within 21 days following the congress.

SASFA was completely surprised when this issue was raised and a decision taken without the Conveners intervention, as he had promised. Furthermore, SASFA was dumbfounded by the unconstitutional Congress decision to take over the administration of schools football. When first and foremost, schools football was never on the agenda of the Extra Ordinary Congress as required by the SAFA Constitution, moreover, that the Congress’ decision to take over schools’ football was instigated based on disinformation.

THE HISTORIC 20 YEARS EXISTENCE OF SASFA

The SA Schools Football Association a bedrock of Youth Development and social cohesion has been in existence for the past 20 years after undergoing metamorphosis from unity stage when fragmented Schools Sport bodies from the previous order Education came together in 1994 to usher in Unity, Participation and Integrated Development under the aegis of the then USSASA. Football was part of the 25 active sporting codes. With the demise of USSASA Mother Body, USSASA Football then had to undergo change and was later known as the SA Schools Football Association.

Schooling, learning and teaching become ineffective when the umbilical cord between academia and extra- mural activities is cut. The natural process of schools being the honing ground for the holistic development of the child loses meaning since it has been proven that an active body produces excellent results. It is on this basis that SASFA continues to be catalyst in fostering effective learning and teaching, promoting the culture of education through sport. The creation of sound school football programmes seek to assist in this regard.

The era we live in today necessitates that together as a collective work hand in glove in assisting our future citizens to be organised, responsible to work as individuals as well as part of a collective team. The skills that the child learns in the field of play are guaranteed to help them when they are adults. For example when they gather from various schools, bonds of friendships are cemented and maybe relied upon in the real world at a later stage.

The SA Schools Football Association runs a number of programmes that seek to introduce all children of this country to enjoy participating in organised football whether recreational, motor coordination, developmental, competitive and to keep fit. The various partnerships that we have forged over the years have yielded positive and impact legacies for the participating schools and players alike. We have witnessed the upgrading of infrastructure of class rooms, buildings, sports combos, upgrade of security systems and some even went on to purchase vehicles to ferry learners to school tours, games etc.

We are very much proud of the history and relationship that we have fostered with SAFA, Department of Basic Education, Sport & Recreation South Africa, SASCOC, and our commercial partners since inception being KFC for the KFC Cup, Cadbury for Chappies Little League, MTN for the MTN u/16 Cup, loveLife Games, Spur Masidlale, our current sponsors being Danone South Africa for Danone U/12, Nestle for Milo Champs u/13, McDonald’s South Africa for the SASFA McDonald’s U/14 School League, Coca – Cola South Africa for the Copa Coca – Cola U/15 Cup, Metropolitan for the Metropolitan u/16 Cup and the Motsepe Foundation for the SANLAM Kay Motsepe Schools Cup.

Through the above partnerships and collaborations, SASFA programmes have given an opportunity to play an active role to many educators that served as officials in administration and technical aspect of the game, learners as participants and match officials, the lucky ones went on to ply their football skills in the National Junior Teams, PSL & NFD outfits some even made a mark in the various international tournaments and events.
