Wayde van Niekerk matches Bob Beamon's

unthinkable Olympic feat

By Craig Ray | Aug 15, 2016 |

Grey College burst into song on Monday morning in honour of their

Olympic gold medallist Wayde van Niekerk.

Wayde van Niekerk’s world record run on his way to gold in the 400m at the Rio Olympics on Sunday night ranks alongside Bob Beamon’s 1968 long jump as the greatest athletic achievement in men’s Olympic history.
Nearly 31 summer Olympics have come and gone and in the 120 years since the first modern Games in Athens in 1896‚ superhuman feats – most legal‚ some not – have characterised the gathering.
But until Sunday night no single moment had quite matched Beamon’s 8.90m in Mexico City 1968.
Beamon broke the world record by 55cm – over half a metre – at high altitude.
On Sunday night in Rio‚ Van Niekerk threw his name into the conversation of ‘the greatest athletics performance at the Olympics’ by smashing a 17-year-old world record on his way to gold.
He stunned onlookers‚ among them Jamaica’s spring king Usain Bolt‚ who couldn’t hide his disbelief when he saw the time.
Michael Johnson’s 1999 mark of 43.18 seemed safe but Van Niekerk – running in the unfavoured outside lane eight – crossed the line five metres clear of his nearest rivals in 43.03 seconds. It was stunning; unbelievable almost.
He would have beaten Johnson by a metre‚ from lane eight.
The previous fastest anyone had run at the Olympics from lane eight was in Athens in 2004 when Grenada’s Alleyne Francique clocked 44.66 in the final to finish fourth.
Van Niekerk was 1.63 seconds faster than that‚ which translates to about 13 metres on the track.
Johnson’s 1996 Olympic record of 43.49‚ set in Atlanta in 1996‚ was always likely to come under threat considering the quality of the field‚ which included 2012 and 2008 Olympic champions Kirani James and LaShawn Merritt respectively.
Van Niekerk served notice ran 43.45 on his way to winning the World Championships in Beijing in 2015.
In the Olympic final James posted a season’s best 43.76 to take silver‚ as did Merritt who took bronze in 43.85 while another two runners in the final posted national records.
World records in sprints are usually achieved in tiny increments‚ but Van Niekerk slice off Johnson’s mark was massive just as Beamon’s leap changed the limits of long jump.
Before Beamon launched himself into Mexico City’s thin air with his first jump in the final‚ 8.50m was seen as the Holy Grail of long jumping. With one bound Beamon turned the conversation to whether the nine-metre barrier could be broken.

Johnson took the 400m close to the 43-second barrier but after his record stood for 17 years‚ the thought of someone breaking 43 seconds receded.
But with one lap of the blue Rio track Van Niekerk has brought the 43 barrier into the spotlight.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS:
London 2012: 800m – Kenyan David Rudisha lowers his own world record from 1:41.01 to 1:40.91‚ becoming the first man to break the 1:41 barrier.
Beijing 2008: 100m – Jamaica’s Usain Bolt wins the first of his three 100m Olympic titles in 9.69 seconds‚ breaking his own world record by 0.03 seconds.
Atlanta 1996: 200m – American Michael Johnson takes 0.34 seconds off his own world record‚ recording 19.32 in the final.
Barcelona 1992: 400m hurdles – American Kevin Young obliterates Edwin Moses’ record of 47.02 seconds‚ clocking 46.78. Young’s record still stands.
Berlin 1936: 200m – American Jesse Owens‚ who had already won the 100m‚ took the sprint double by slashing the 200m world record in 20.7 seconds.

Former sports minister Makhenkesi Stofile has died

By Buchule Raba and Ernest Mabuza | Aug 15, 2016 |

Arnold Makhenkesi Stofile‚ former ambassador‚ cabinet minister and Eastern Cape premier has died at the age of 72.

African National Congress spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said that the provincial leadership of the ANC were on their way to his home in Alice.
“The provincial leadership is on the way to his home and we will release a statement as soon as we get a confirmation from the family‚” said Kodwa.
It was not clear at this stage what the cause of death was.
Stofile was born on the 27 of December 1944‚ in the Winterberg District of Adelaide‚ Eastern Cape.
Stofile entered politics in 1963 as a member of the African Students’ Association‚ an African National Congress (ANC) front organisation‚ but only came to the fore on the political front when he became the regional secretary and a member of the National Executive Committee of the United Democratic Front (UDF)between 1983 and 1986.
Stofile then obtained a Masters of Arts degree from Princeton University in the USA in 1983.
He was awarded a D.Phil (hc) by the University of Port Elizabeth in 2000.
He became a key person in the establishment and development of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the Border region.
In 1991‚ he was elected as a member of the NEC of the ANC‚ becoming its Treasurer General in 1994.
In 1994‚ he became a Member of Parliament as well as the chief whip of the ANC in Parliament. Stofile was the Chairperson of the (ANC) in the Eastern Cape from 1996.
He was re-appointed as treasurer general of the ANC in 1995‚ a post he held until 1997‚ when he became Premier of the Eastern Cape until 2004. In 2004‚ he was appointed to the cabinet as Minister of Sport and Recreation‚ a post he held until 2010.

Memorable quotes from the late Rev Makhenkesi Stofile

These are some of the memorable quotes from the Rev Makhenkesi Stofile‚ who died on Monday morning in Alice‚ in the Eastern Cape‚ aged 72‚ after an illness.
February 2005
“We have called on the sport administrators to sacrifice a little bit in terms of wanting to win‚ because even when we field these lily-white teams we lose. We need to look at the broader values of a broader South African nation that is proud to be participating in the international fraternity. That is what is transformation.”
Stofile was speaking at the state of the nation debate in Parliament.
November 2007
“Quotas were used only for window dressing for international consumption. Those who have the money go and buy the players ... instead of developing the boys where they are.
“We must kill the myth that ... black people cannot play certain sporting codes because they are black‚” the minister told MPs on the decision to scrap the racial quotas for non-white players on the country’s rugby and cricket teams.
September 2009
“I think it would be the third world war. We will go to the highest levels in contesting such a decision. I think it would be totally unfair and totally unjust.
“The ministry feels let down by the way this matter is being handled by those with devious vested interest‚ especially after being promised a meeting with the IAAF leadership.
“No one doubts her gender anymore. Now the issue of the percentages of her gender; this is unethical and disgusting.”
Stofile was speaking after there were talks that the athletics governing body IAAF was considering banning athlete Caster Semenya because of questions about her gender.
October 2015
“He died on the day the Springboks were beaten by Japan. I see he was disgusted and he decided to go‚” Stofile said at the funeral of his brother Mike Stofile last year. Japan had beaten South Africa 34-32 in one of the greatest Rugby World Cup upsets ever.
December 2015
“I was not sure about the wisdom of sending an old man as Ambassador to such an important country. With hindsight I now understand the ANC´s choice. A veteran and senior politician is better placed to serve one’s country in faraway countries. The knowledge and experience acquired over decades equips one to be firm on principles and yet to be flexible in strategy and tactics.” Stofile made these remarks as he bid farewell to Germany where he was ambassador from 2011 to 2015

Not much done since the Marikana massacre

By Nomahlubi Jordaan | Aug 15, 2016 |

While “significant strides” have been made since the Marikana massacre‚ a lot is still to be realised.

This is according to Bishop Jo Seoka‚ one of the overseers of the Marikana commemorations.
Tuesday‚ August 16 marks four years since the Marikana massacre in which 34 mineworkers were shot dead‚ but the demands of the victims of the fateful event and families of those who died are‚ according to Seoka‚ yet to be met.
“We’ve been asking for the building of a monument where the names of those who died will be inscribed.
“We’ve been asking the government to declare August 16 a public holiday‚” Seoka said at a press briefing on Monday.
He said the victims of the massacre and the families of those who died are still waiting for a public apology from those directly involved in the massacre.
“Many wounds won’t heal until the demands are met. Widows want to know who gave authority for the trigger to be pulled. They want to know what happened‚” said Seoka.
While salaries of the mine workers at Lonmin have increased‚ the bulk of them still live in squalor and work under dangerous conditions‚ Seoka said.
“Very little is being done in Madibeng. The results of the [local government] elections reflect the anger of the people
“It is a strong message that people are fed up. We can’t celebrate the fifth anniversary [of the Marikana massacre] with empty hands.”

Medical experts rubbish DA man's 'ineffective' vaccine claim

By Katharine Child | Aug 08, 2016 | COMMENTS [ 1 ]

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases says data shows the rotavirus vaccine given to babies to prevent severe diarrhea and death infants does work‚ contrary to a claim that there is a problem with the vaccine’s effectiveness.

Earlier on Monday‚ the Gauteng Democratic Alliance spokesman on health‚ Jack Bloom‚ suggested in a press release there was currently a problem with the rotavirus vaccines in Gauteng. The vaccine is given to infants to protects against multiple strains of the rotavirusm which can cause severe diarrhea and death.
Bloom claimed there were increased cases in hospitals of babies with severe gastroenteritis who had been given the vaccine.
He suggested this must mean there was a problem with the vaccine’s effectiveness or the way vaccines were being transported.
“The companies producing the vaccines need to explain why they have not worked and ensure that babies are properly immunized against this highly contagious virus‚” Bloom said.
But experts rubbished these claims.
Director of the National Institute of Communicable Diseases Shabir Madhi‚ whose research led to the vaccine being included in South Africa’s government programme‚ called Bloom’s press release “poorly informed“.
He said the rotavirus vaccine did not protect against every case of rotavirus‚ there were other causes of diarrhea in infants and there were often seasonal spikes or sudden increases in rotavirus or diarrhea.
“Rotavirus while a very important cause of infantile diarrhea‚ is not the only cause of diarrhea in infants‚” said Lucille Blumberg‚ deputy director of institute.
In fact‚ Madhi said “the rotavirus vaccine programme has been so effective that other viruses such as norovirus and bacteria are now proportionately more common causes of diarrhea compared to before we introduced rotavirus vaccine into the immunization program“.
The other reason blaming “ineffective” vaccines for an increase in cases is wrong is that it is normal to see were seasonal spikes in diarrhea.
“It is not uncommon to get a spike in diarrhea cases at this time of the year‚ including some rotavirus cases‚ since the virus circulation comes as epidemics. The magnitude of the epidemics are ‚ however‚ much lower then before we introduced rotavirus vaccine into the public immunization program‚” Madhi said.
The vaccine does not protect against every rotavirus case either.
“The rotavirus vaccine is only 70-75% effective in South Africa‚ which is higher than in many other low-income countries‚ but it has a had a tremendous impact on diarrheal hospitalization in South Africa- including a 40-50% reduction in all-cause diarrhea hospitalization‚” Madhi said.
Blumberg said South Africa had a long-standing monitoring programme for rotavirus‚ with sites in a number of hospitals‚ with institute having played a key role in this for some years.
“The programme monitors for the different strains and over the past few years there is good evidence to support the protective effect of the vaccine for the strains that have circulated and the efficacy of the vaccine‚” Blumberg said.

We help sheriff pluck chicken Ponzi scheme - Investors swindled of over R210m

By Thuli Zungu | Aug 15, 2016 | COMMENTS [ 4 ]

Agri Smart chief operations officer David Scott Laughland will face the might of the law after his company allegedly swindled investors out of about R120-million in the past 18 months.

This follows the article Sowetan published last Monday in which we exposed the investment as an apparent rip-off. Last Thursday, Steenkamp Attorneys obtained an interdict allowing the sheriff of the court to attach anything from pens, pencils, cars, property, bank accounts to furniture that Laughland owns, said Christo van Niekerk of Steenkamp Attorneys.
But Laughland was neither home nor in his office when the sheriff attached his properties on Friday.
The court order was served on FNB at Bank City, central Johannesburg, allowing the law firm to attach Laughland's bank accounts, said Van Niekerk. They also served the order on the Financial Services Board, the SA Reserve bank, the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission and the Hawks.
Van Niekerk estimated the investors' loses at R120-million. He said Steenkamp Attorneys took an inventory of all the stuff found at Laughland's house and business premises. "We will go back to remove the items," he said.
Laughland is alleged to have hoodwinked about 600 unsuspecting consumers and promised them lucrative profits after luring them to invest into a chicken farming business that was never set to fly.
He allegedly swindled investors from budding entrepreneurs to pensioners and pastors alike by showing them only one poultry production farm in Bronkhorstspruit, about 50km east of Pretoria, under false pretence that it had an output of about 30000 chickens per month.
In his adverts, he also raised their expectations when he told them he would like to produce a minimum of 350000 chickens per month in order to cover the demands of the contractor he sends the chickens to. To reach that minimum target, he needed 15 more farms and encouraged investors to come in their numbers to either own the whole or part of the farm, with promises that he would assist them with management issues for the first few years.
That saw consumers like Betty Malapane, 50, of KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga investing R500000 of her pension fund after resigning as a teacher in August last year.
Malapane said she saw this as a viable investment product after a friend sold it to her. The friend and her husband had invested R300000 and received the promised payout of R9000 for two months when they enticed her to join, she said.
The friends, a well-known pastor and his wife, confirmed this but preferred to have their identity withheld, stating they were embarrassed by the decision they made.
Shivaan Sunderlall, 35, an engineer based in Mpumalanga, lost R250000 after taking two packages with a total payout of R11000 per month. He said he was shown a vacant farm with no chicken in sight but a few huts and told it was one of the 15 farms earmarked for the growing investment scheme. He received nothing after parting with his hard-earned money, he said. David Moerane and his wife Tsholofelo of Rustenburg in North West were the first investors to blow the whistle on the scam. They paid R50000 for a mini chicken house and 500 chickens they were promised in June.
Moerane was working on his retirement plan as he wanted to take an early retirement when he was lured into the scheme as he has a passion for farming. Later, he attended their presentation where he was offered a contract of R50000 as he already had a plot where he could put up a mini house that could hold 1000 chickens. He was guaranteed a weekly profit of R16000, which lured him into parting with his R50000, he said. His plot's measurements were taken, and he was promised that a chicken house would be built within two weeks and chickens delivered.
He is still waiting to this day.
Laki Lekala of Sunnyside in Pretoria said he responded to an internet advert Agri Smart posted on OLX and Gumtree in June last year. He then took a loan to invest in the enterprise.
Lekala received seven payments until they stopped in March this year, he said.
Upon approaching their offices, he found 12 more people who were complaining about nonpayments, he said.
Though all of them were given forms to cancel and claim their money back, nothing happened afterwards.
Martin Gouws, who leased his farm to Laughland, said the article published last Monday was just the tip of an iceberg.
Gouws said within a few months after leasing his farm to Laughland, about four people he knew had lost more than R1-million in his "investment" scheme.
Gouws said he tried to warn the SA Reserve Bank about Laughland's activities but was not successful as they ignored him.
"It is nothing but a Ponzi scheme," said Gouws.
When asked for comment, Laughland told Consumer Line to stop harassing him and his company.
"I am applying for a interim protection order against you tomorrow (last Thursday). You will hear from our lawyers soon," he said.
Van Niekerk has since urged investors to contact Steenkamp Attorneys at 074-166-9441; fax: 086-573-3674/074-166-9441/074-162- 0665/074-175-3394/074-170-2377 or e-mail christo@steenkampatt.co.za in order to take part in this class action and ensure justice is done.
