Cape Town – Perhaps it is in the spirit of transformation and
employment equity that Bp Southern Africa (Bpsa) appointed Priscillah
Mabelane, a chartered accountant, as its first black female chief
executive officer.
Mabelane becomes the first woman in the history of South Africa’s oil industry to head a multi-national company.
An analyst attested this week, “This marks a significant milestone in
the organisation and the industry’s transformation journey.”
Before her appointment, Mabelane was chief financial officer of the
British oil and gas giant after she joined the group six years ago.
She will take the helm as CEO on September 1.
BPSA said Mabelane has more than 20 years of service in a number of
key leadership positions. She brings a “wealth of world-class experience
and expertise” to her new role as chief executive.
Prior to joining BP, Mabelane held various executive roles in a number of large South African companies.
She worked at Airports Company of South Africa as the chief financial
officer; Ernst & Young where she was a tax director, and at Eskom
where she held various roles in finance, tax and general management.
BPSA chairperson Thandi Orleyn thanked the outgoing chief executive,
Daniel Odogwu, who was at the helm for three-and-a-half years and
welcomed Mabelane.
“Given her proven track record in her previous executive roles, we
are confident that Priscillah will be a strong leader for our business,
especially as we continue to explore new areas of growth and
development,” Orleyn said.
“Priscillah’s appointment reinforces BPSA’s pioneering role and
strength of commitment to cultivating a diverse and inclusive workforce
that will breed creativity and ensure we meet, even exceed customer
expectations.”
Mabelane’s appointment follows closely on the heels of two recent
female senior executive appointments to the BPSA leadership team –
Kelebogile Tseladimitlwa as human resources director Southern Africa,
and Prinisha Khoosal as commercial integration manager, Southern Africa,
during the latter part of 2016.
The road to becoming the first black female CEO for BP Southern Africa started sometime back for Mabalane.
She had to overcome adversity along the way from attending a primary school under a tree in Burgersfor.
“I didn’t have a 20-year plan, but I am ambitious, and I knew I wanted to end up in the C-suite,” said Mabalane.
BPSA is a subsidiary of the BP Group - the multinational giant that
employs more than 1,000 people and has 500 service stations in SA.
It also has 45 percent of a commercial and industrial fuels marketing
business with Masana Petroleum Solutions. This includes a joint
shareholding with Shell SA in the country’s largest fuel refinery,
Sapref.
Mabelane started her career at Ernst & Young. She was the only black woman in the Pietermaritzburg office.
This came after she completed her studies at the University of the
North (now the University of Limpopo) and the University of KwaZulu
Natal.
Former real estate agent Vicki Momberg was sentenced
to an effective two years in prison by the Randburg Magistrate's Court
on Wednesday for her racist tirade in 2016.
She used the k-word 48 times during her now infamous racist rant.
Momberg was convicted of four counts of crimen injuria in November 2017.
In her judgment on March 28, Magistrate Pravina Rugoonandan said it's questionable whether Momberg showed remorse.
The court sentenced her to three years in prison, with one year suspended.

Comedian and producer Byron Allen acquired the Weather
Channel TV network as he looks to expand his film and TV production
company into a major media business.
Allen’s Entertainment Studios Inc. bought the network from Blackstone Group, Bain Capital and Comcast Corp., according to a statement
Thursday.
The price was approximately $300 million, according to a
person familiar with the terms who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly
and asked not to be identified. That’s a fraction of what the larger
company sold for a decade ago.
The
deal includes the famous cable TV network, but not online assets such
as the website Weather.com and related mobile apps, which were acquired
by International Business Machines Corp. in January 2016.
In an
interview on a day in which rain and snow blanketed much of the U.S.,
Allen said he was attracted to the reach and familiarity of the brand.
“Snowstorms, rain, mudslides, our lives and our families’
safety depend on this info,” Allen said. “When a big storm happens, it’s
the Super Bowl of weather. As many as 30 million people watch.”
Allen’s
company produces and syndicates TV shows and has released films, such
as last year’s thriller “47 Meters Down.” It also owns Comedy.tv and
Cars.tv, which are distributed online and through pay-TV providers.
Allen
said he want to invest more in the Weather Channel, expanding both its
international and local distribution. It’s part of a broader strategy to
invest what he said would be billions of dollars in the media and
entertainment industry.
The Comcast-Blackstone-Bain-led group had
purchased the Weather Channel in 2008 for about $3.5 billion. A
spokesman for Blackstone declined to comment.

African top soccer club's Youth Development this week gained great
momentum as the successful commencement of the 2018 U17 Future Champions
Gauteng International Tournament on Monday attests to this.
Hosted
at the Nike Football Training Centre in Pimville, Soweto, the
prestigious junior competition got off to a thrilling start.
The
Future Champions Gauteng International Tournament is celebrating its
10th year of giving some of the top junior players in the world the
chance to share the same pitch and develop their skills against
different styles of football.
The Future Champions Gauteng
International Tournament is organised by Global Sports International in
conjunction with the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and
Recreation, the Gauteng Department of Education and the South African
Football Association (SAFA).
This year’s competition is also be supported by Sedgars Sport, Clinix, LaLiga, Gauteng Coaches and the City of Johannesburg.
South African side Orlando Pirates FC were the big winners on the opening day of the tournament.
Pirates
had to come from a goal down to beat Namibian side Black Africa Hopsol.
This was after Oliver Baas had headed the visitors into the lead.
But
the Young Buccaneers responded in clinical style. With Siyabonga Buda,
Marx Hakeem and Augustine Mahlonoka finding the back of the net for a
3-1 victory..
Mamelodi Sundowns also got their campaign off to an excellent start. With a fine 2-1 victory over Belgian side Clube Brugge.
Thando
Buthelezi bagged a brace for The Brazilians. While Brugge managed a
consolation through captain Milan Vanacker, who converted from the
penalty spot.
Dutch club ADO Den Haag looked as though they would
be held to a goalless draw by Zambian side Nkana FC. But were awarded
two late penalties in the final five minutes of the game that were both
converted by their skipper Lorenzo van Kleef.
Italian side AC Reggiana held Spanish LaLiga outfit RCD Espanyol to a 1-1 draw in their opener.
Federico
Ziveri was on target for the Italians. While Oriol netted for RCD
Espanyol, though both sides might have grabbed a winner.
The
final game of the day though. Was between Russian side Spartak Moscow
and local club BidVest Wits played to a 0-0 draw in their clash.
The game was an entertaining one between these two very good teams. Who in the end cancelled each other out.
Meanwhile, Mycomlink reports that "BidVest Wits will be the only local
representatives in the semi-finals of the 2018 Future Champions Gauteng
International Tournament after topping their pool with a late victory
over Italian side AC Reggiana on Wednesday.
They will now face a
semi-final clash with Dutch side ADO Den Haag on Friday, while the other
Last 4 fixture sees Belgian outfit Club Brugge take on FC Spartak from
Russia.
The four sides topped their first round pools on Wednesday as the group stages were complete with yet more thrilling football.
Wits secured their place with a deserved success as Ben Melamdowitz netted a late one for them.
They
beat RCD Espanyol into second place in Group D despite the Spanish side
claiming a 2-1 success over local favourites Orlando Pirates FC.
Oscar and Adria netted for the Spaniards, while Marx Hakeem grabbed what proved a consolation for the Young Buccaneers.
RCD
Espanyol will now face Zambian side Nkana FC in their play-off game in
two days’ time after they claimed a thrilling 3-2 success over Mamelodi
Sundowns.
In a match that swung one way and then the other,
Nelson Kaula, Mubanga Mulenga and Isaac Zulu were on target for the
Zambians, while Thato Matli and Cassius Mailula netted for the local
side.
ADO Den Haag claimed their semi-final place with a 3-1 win
over Highlands Park, including a third goal of the competition for
Lorenzo van Kleef, who moves to the top of the scorers chart.
Timo
de Vreede and Rini van der Walt were also on target for the Netherlands
side, while Eric Tivane grabbed the goal for Highlands Park.
Club
Brugge stayed on course for the trophy as they beat Jomo Cosmos 1-0
with Gabriel Lemoine getting the only goal of the game, while FC Spartak
secured their semi-final spot with a comprehensive 5-0 win over
Namibian side Black Africa Hopsol.
Pavel Kosongov (two), Ilya Predeys, Nikita Iosifov and Nikita Morgynov netted for the Russians.
In
